Ride Gradings

MBTC rides are hugely varied in terms of level, from relaxed social rides to multi-day bush expedition touring.

This page explains the different gradings used in the ride descriptions you see on our MeetUp events.

Make sure you carefully read the ride description to check if a ride looks right for you, and reach out to the Ride Leader via MeetUp direct messages if you aren’t sure.

SOCIAL
15-40Kms flat or lightly undulating.
Easy going social pace.
From a few hours and up to half a day.
These rides are usually within suburbia on sealed roads or well maintained bike paths.
These rides can be as much about drinking coffee as they are about the ride itself.
Suitable for any type of bike, and inexperienced riders.

BEGINNERS
20-50kms flat terrain or undulating terrain with infrequent steep hills.
Easy group pace with frequent regrouping.
Day rides and overnight rides using fixed accommodation or as ‘intro to camping’ rides.
Suburban locations and also often quiet rural roads and rail trails.
Suitable for any type of bike in good condition, and any moderately fit rider.

INTERMEDIATE
40Kms+ with or without hills.
Includes quiet back roads and rail trails by preference.
Day or multi day rides.
In or out of town on a combination of main highways*, sealed and unsealed back roads.
Bush rides include major and intermediate bush tracks, and the occasional bit of rough stuff.

EXPERIENCED
75Kms+ with hills and more hills, steep hills and long hills.
Day or multi day rides.
May involve bunch riding pace to meet critical time deadlines.
Often out of town on a combination of main highways*, sealed and unsealed back roads.
Bush rides include major, intermediate, and minor bush tracks, and a good chance of rough stuff.

*All of our rides avoid the use of main highways where practicable.
